A song cycle inspired by the RSPB’s 2014 discovery of the migratory route of one of Britain’s rarest birds, the red-necked phalarope.

Facing huge obstacles, this tiny creature which weighs no more than a packet of crisps, successfully crosses the Atlantic between Shetland and Peru every year. It passes through environments as diverse and challenging as the icy regions of the north and the storms of the Caribbean.

This little bird’s journey tells an inspiring story about strength and resilience in the face of harsh conditions, and of the unstoppable drive for survival among earth’s creatures.

One Small Bird has been performed by young people and community groups across Britain and we are thrilled to share this extraordinary story with you at the Minack, through the voices of the children of Cornwall.

Three Spires Singers Concert on the 2nd July

Three Spires Singers Concert on the 2nd July

What a season this is proving to be for Three Spires Singers! There has been great response to their boundary-pushing programmes with Graham Fitkin’s new Humphry Davy work in November and then Russell Pascoe’s original take on the requiem genre last month. It was wonderful to see so many of people at these first two concerts “post-Covid”.

For the Three Spires Singers July concert they are going back to some enduring, established classics by Mozart and Haydn.

Mozart’s C Minor Mass is full of angst, drama and unfettered joy, but there are also moments where Mozart shows his gift as a writer of melodies that transcend worldly things and take us onto another plane. Exhibit A is this clip from Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s recording of the work which I listened to a lot at university – the central ‘Christe’ section will melt even the most stressful of days: click here -
https://youtu.be/d55USFu6w-Y?t=148

As well as lots of involved writing for the choir, the work showcases two soprano soloists. You need exactly the right singers for these, with a tonal palette and vocal technique worthy of the music. Fortunately, the Three Spires Singers have Kirsty Hopkins and Rhiannon Llewellyn who I assure you will be worth the ticket price on their own.

They will be welcoming back Frederick Brown to play Mozart’s 23rd piano concerto. Freddie has performed since his days as a chorister in the cathedral choir, (you may know his parents Ian and Sarah who are linchpins of Three Spires Singers, among other things). It has been wonderful to follow his journey through Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music to his current position as a pianist and conductor with Welsh National Opera. Freddie has always thought deeply about music (and many other things!) but when he played Mozart 21 with the Three Spires Singers a few years ago he showed that enviable quality of being unencumbered by all of that thought when in the moment of performance – we can’t wait to hear his stylish and beautiful playing again on 2nd July.

Music and a message of hope

Music and a message of hope

Some words from the teacher

The reason for doing this project was to continue the success of the Cop 26 project - we had lots of interest from Bangladesh for that, so they became the next country to learn about and reach out to. The floods in Bahia had just happened at the time we decided to do the project and obviously tied in with samba teaching, so that became the other focus country. We called it Messages of Hope because it was intended as a message of solidarity, child to child.

We did the art as specific lessons to tie in with the theme. We tried to take a multi media approach to learning about the countries involved. We even made lemon tea at Windmill (for the Bangladesh project).

We did have a really great time making the film and children in both schools always ask me if we are going to do more! I have also had a number of students ask to sign up for strings / drumming lessons.

Saltash Songs & Shanties Festival 10-12 June 2022

Saltash Songs & Shanties Festival 10-12 June 2022

A new music festival will be coming to historic venues across Saltash for a weekend in June. Saltash Songs & Shanties Festival is inspired by the town’s buildings, people and beautiful countryside and features events for the whole family.

Saltash is a vibrant and friendly town filled with enthusiastic and talented people of all ages.  A summer weekend of live music is so welcome. Let’s get all corners of the gateway to Cornwall resonating with sound and enjoyment!
— Judy Whitlock, composer and musician.

The Festival kicks off by welcoming the youngest audiences to Jude’s Music Menagerie at Saltash Library (10.30am and 11.30am, 10 June). From Baby Sharks to Nellie the Elephant, babies, pre-schoolers and their carers are invited to sing-along with instruments large and small – animal outfits welcome!

In the evening of 10 June there is an opportunity to join in and learn shanties and songs with Cornish choir leader and folk singer Claire Ingleheart. The Shanties & Songs of Land & Sea workshop takes place at Saltash’s beautifully refurbished railway station building at 7.30pm and features stories of inspirational women of Cornwall in song, including Saltash rowing legend Ann Glanville.

Saturday 11th June sees string and wind players from across South East Cornwall and Plymouth perform melodic new music by local composer Judy Whitlock alongside works by former Cornish resident Peter Warlock. This classical event takes place in the elegant Guildhall at 7.30pm. Live music continues into the evening at pubs and bars across the town with gigs at The Brunel Inn, Union Inn and more.

The final day of the Festival, Sunday 12 June, features three concerts of music, very new and very old. The day starts at 1.30pm with Elizabethan music at Mary Newman’s Cottage, the oldest building in Saltash (dating from 1480). Matthew Spring will perform on Lute and Hurdy Gurdy while visitors can explore the beautiful house, garden and cafe.

The Railway Station hosts Heaven’s Thunder, a live music and film screening at 4pm. This concert premieres excerpts from the film made of a theatrical show involving horses, riders, musicians at Duchy College in 2021, along with captivating photographs of the horses. The visuals are accompanied by a live performance of songs from the show by 20 costumed singers and instrumentalists.

The Festival ends at the historic Church of St Nicholas and St Faith with a performance by acclaimed Early and World music group Sirinu. The Eliza is the Fairest Queen concert includes lively tunes from the time of Elizabeth I, to celebrate the jubilee year of Elizabeth II, featuring popular songs and dance tunes from the court and countryside.

This will be a great weekend for discovering new music and exploring Saltash with friends and family. The historic buildings in this town are real hidden gems and the enthusiasm from musicians for performing in them has been amazing.
— Lindsay Endean, Festival Director
