Cornwall Youth Chamber Choir couldn’t meet for face to face rehearsals during the Summer Term but Lockdown didn’t stop us singing as rehearsals shifted to Zoom!
Here is a recording of one of the songs the choir worked on during that time.
Huge thanks to Choir member Bryher and her Father for putting this beautiful recording together for us. Normal rehearsals will be resuming in September. Watch this space for more information!
This project was a part of the first-ever CMST Virtual Summer School where participants engaged with 3 days of inspiring musical activities. One of the outcomes was this virtual orchestra performance of David Frost’s wonderful arrangement of ‘Thank You For The Music’, directed by Sara Munns.
Should you wish to make any donations, this can be done via this link.

Today should have seen a major recorder workshop and concert take place. Unfortunately, this was not possible this year so Sarah Whomersley has put together this ‘virtual’ concert for you to enjoy instead!
Cornwall Youth Brass Ensemble got together remotely during Lockdown to create a performance of "Tube Ride" by ex-member French Horn player, Tom FIndlay, who is now studying at the Royal College Of Music. Each part was recorded individually and added to the mix to create the final piece. CYBE usually meets once a month but will continue to work remotely for now. Players are at least grade 6 standard. If any orchestral brass players are interested in joining CYBE, there are positions available for Trumpet and Trombones. Please contact smunns@cornwallmusicservicetrust.org with your enquiry.
We are very grateful to David Jones for compiling and editing the video, below.
The Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra were unable to complete their year of preparation and perform what was gearing up to be a super concert series in Carnglaze Caverns at Easter. During lockdown, the musicians have been working remotely to produce an arrangement of Rondino Pathetique by Gareth Churcher. This is the result and the start of several pieces which will be performed in this way.
If you or someone you know would like to be part of this friendly ensemble please see our recent post about online application and audition here.
Applications are invited for young musicians to join the Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra for the forthcoming academic year. An application form is available by clicking this link.
Before lockdown, pupils of Falmouth and Helston ‘Next Steps’ were working hard to perform in their Summer concerts.
Unfortunately, the concerts were postponed, so we did the next best thing and recorded a virtual version for you to hear.
We hope you enjoy it...
Ned Larrett, a pupil of Barbara Degener at Boscastle School, wanted to send a message to all the staff of the NHS, Here he is playing “Gypsy Fiddle” by Edward Huws Jones.
Over 200 Cornwall-based and Cornish-bred musicians and singers create a Lockdown recording of ‘One Day More’ from Les Miserables.
With the theatre world in complete shutdown and thousands of musicians and singers throughout the country being confined to their homes, an idea was put forward to bring performers in Cornwall together. Launched on Sunday 26 April, Lockdown Cornwall had responses from over 400 people of all ages and backgrounds wishing to become involved. Participants were sent directions to video their performance in their own home, along with a piano guide track and sheet music. Production team member Helen Hartshorne says “When Keith Edwards came to us with this idea, we expected to get 50-100 people. To see this number of participants is wonderful.”
The production team, who received over 17 hours of video, started editing straight away. The orchestra track of 64 musicians - the size of a full symphony orchestra - was completed in less than 3 days. 21 soloists were then added to the track to share the 8 principal roles, followed by a chorus of 135. Trumpeter Sally Johns: “The wonderful camaraderie with people I've never met has been amazing. This experience is something I'll always remember with pride and gratitude when we look back at these strange times!”
Just 13 days after the project’s launch, the finished audio was premiered live on BBC Radio Cornwall on Saturday 9 May, with the full video completed and launched in the early hours of Wednesday 13 May, a mere 2 weeks since materials were sent out. Viewers are being invited to make a donation to Age UK Cornwall via the YouTube or Facebook pages.
